Affordable Wedding Dresses - 1950s

Sorry this is late but I felt rubbish yesterday. Plus, it was bank holiday so I couldn't be bothered.

This week I'm bringing you a collection of 1950s affordable wedding dresses. When you picture fifties dresses you immediately think of voluminous skirts with fitted bodices; like Jackie Kennedy's wedding dress at her wedding to JFK in 1953. This incredibly flattering style is very feminine and evokes a princess feeling, It's not for everyone but a lot of people are choosing fifties-style wedding dresses for their big day.

On the other hand, the fifties also saw the popularity of wiggle dresses sore. Marilyn Monroe was largely responsible for their popularity and she wore a tight fitted dress to her wedding to Arthur Miller in 1956. This style is less popular nowadays but it's a very chic look that can give the wow factor if you're brave enough to go for the shape showing style.

Pearly Queen - Kitty and Dulcie

First up is a classic 1950s-style wedding dress from Kitty and Dulcie. It has a fitted bodice and a knee-length full circle skirt. The dress also features delicate beading on the top.

I love the way they've styled it with the hand gloves and the gorgeous emerald shoes.

Raw Silk Dupion and Lace Wedding Dress - Not On The High Street

This beautiful fifties-style wedding dress is handmade by Brighton based company Dig For Victory. They make lovely dresses with a fifties look. This wedding dress is a classic example. Again it has the typical fifties fitted bodice and circle skirt. This one has delicate lace sleeves which add interest to the plain silk dupion.

Such a pretty dress.

50s Satin French Lace Wiggle Dress - Etsy

This affordable wedding dress from Simplicityisbliss on Etsy has a different look to the previous two, it's a wiggle style dress that's beautifully fitted and features a scalloped lace top.

It's a real 1950s wedding dress that's beautifully crafted and apparently still in excellent condition. It'd make a really stylish wedding dress.

1950s Halterneck Ivory Duchess Dress - Vivien of Holloway

This is another classic fifties look. The halterneck wedding dress is extremely flattering on almost any figure. It has a supportive bodice that nips in and pushes out at all the right places.

The circle dress is crafted from plain ivory duchess satin, a simple but beautiful look for your big day.

1950s Vintage Wedding Gown - Etsy

Last but not least is this beautiful vintage wedding gown from Etsy shop FabGabs. Unlike the other dresses this one is full length, it has a similar feel to Jackie Kennedy's wedding dress with the nibbed in waist, large skirt and off the shoulder sleeves.

Normally I wouldn't usually go for a full skirted look but I'm in love with this wedding dress. It's got a beautiful cut and I particularly like the contrast of the plain gown with the pretty lace collar.

This is a real vintage 1950s wedding dress so you'd be wearing a part of history.

Audrey Hepburn, Roger Moore and Angela Lansbury are among the stars that feature in the lost photographs of George Douglas. The famous photographer died in 2010 but several previously unseen photographs were recently found in his Brighton home. The pictures span the 1940s - 1960s and capture celebrities during their down time.

George Douglas was known as Speedy George because of his fast work rate. As well as celebrities he also turned his hand to capturing other subjects, including the first female chimney sweep.

The photographs are due to go on display in Brighton this month. Definitely one to see if you're in the area.

Affordable Wedding Dresses - Green Queen

This is my last coloured affordable wedding dresses post for a while; next Monday I'll be back to classic white styles, scroll to the bottom of this post to find out the theme.

I think green is a great colour to end on. From deep emerald to cool mint, green opens up a range of options for weddings.

This week's green affordable wedding dresses are inspired by two of Elizabeth Taylor's wedding gowns. She wore the first one to her fourth wedding to Eddie Fisher in 1959.

It's a beautiful deep green and a classic cinched in style that showed off her famously slim waist. Who would have thought a hood would work on a wedding dress?

Liz obviously liked green as she wore it again at her sixth wedding and second one to Richard Burton. Her dress is a light shade of green with a floaty ethereal feel.

These two styles really showcase the versatility of green as a wedding dress colour; it can be classic and elegant or bohemian and floaty.

This is another bridesmaid dress that would make a great green wedding dress. It's from Australian company Sentani (they ship to the UK) and is a barely there shade of mint. It's ideal if you want a subtle touch of colour but still want a traditional look.

It's a classic style with a lace bodice and silk chiffon skirt. I love the capped sleeves.

This is a genuine vintage 60s dress from Etsy seller Dainty Rascal, ideal if you're having a 60s themed wedding and want the real thing. It's an unusual style with light silk chiffon over heavy silk taffeta.

I love the low back and the lace sleeves. It's ideal for a woodland wedding.

If you want to opt for a short wedding dress in a green shade then this gorgeous emerald dress from Dig For Victory is ideal. It's got a 40s/50s feel and provides an hourglass silouette that's flattering on anyone.

Affordable Wedding Dresses - Gold

I've only got a few more coloured affordable wedding dresses before I get back to good old fashioned white gowns. This week it's gold. Gold is only a quick step from white; it still allows you to keep a traditional look on your big day but also add something a little bit different.

Gold equates to glamour; if your after a golden gown then chances are you're going for an upmarket day and dress, like Serena's wedding dress in Gossip Girl. This doesn't necessarily mean that you have to spend a lot on your wedding dress; I've tracked down some golden lovelies that would make perfect wedding dresses. Plus, they're all under £250.

This beautiful golden gown would make a perfect wedding dress, especially if you are after a soulful twenties or thirties theme. It's got a simple and flattering cut that allows the gold and cream sequin detail to, literally, shine.

You could style this a number of ways, but I suggest keeping accessories to a minimum and rocking some Hollywood waves in the hair.

This light gold fifties dress is perfect for a Mad Men style wedding. It's an original vintage dress so you'll know you're wearing a piece of the past.

Affordable Wedding Dresses: Think Pink

Last week it was affordable blue wedding dresses and this week it's pink. A lot of celebrities have been rocking pink wedding dresses recently. Gwen Stefani started the trend with her dip dyed pink wedding dress.

Portia De Rossi followed up with a subtle pink wedding dress in her wedding to Ellen Degeneres.

More recently Jessica Biel and Kaley Cuoco have worn pink gowns for their special day.

I've got to admit, the thought of pink wedding dresses used to make me cringe; they were a bit too Katie Price for me. But I've discovered some that are lovely and don't have that cupcake look about them. Plus, they're all affordable and below £200.

This lovely lace dress from ModCloth has a very subtle pink blush to it; so you can have a touch of pink without going over the top. It has a classic cut with a vintage thirties feel.
